I have a dell dimension 8400 desktop PC. I need help with memory?

I got it in 2005, it has all the programs I love, but it only has 512 MB memory. The paperwork says it has 4 slots one with 256 DIMM and one with 256 DIMM and 2 empty slots. So I need to know what and how much memory to buy.
Do I take the two 256’s out and buy four of something? or leave them in and buy two of something like two 2G memory banks, and do I only use DIMM and is there a good brand?

If I were you, I would get the faster of the two, the DDR2 533MHz (PC2-4200). You can get 2 x 1GB for under $30.

Because this may be faster than the memory that’s already in it, you may want to remove them and place the new memory in the same slots the old memory was in. 2 reasons for this. First, if the new memory is a faster speed than the old memory and you use both speeds together, the new memory would declock to the slower memory’s speed. They aren’t able to run at two different speeds, so the new memory would have to default to the slower memory’s speed. Don’t get me wrong, the two different speeds of memory will work together just fine at the slower speed, I just wanted to mention it in order to optimize performance. Second, that system supports dual channel memory. There is a small performance increase that can be gained if memory is installed correctly. To take advantage of this benefit, memory modules must be installed in matched sets, like the two 256’s, in the proper slots. The slots with the white locks are a matched set as are the slots with the black locks. The matched set of 256MB modules should be in matching colored slots.
If you’re using a 32 bit operating system, the maximum amount of memory that your system can address (read and utilize) is 3GB. Maybe slightly more, but for all intensive purposes, it’s 3GB. So, if you wanted to install the maximum amount of memory in your system you’d want to buy 2 x 1GB (two pack, matched set) and 2 x 512MB (two pack, matched set) for a total of 3GB. You can put 4 x 1GB in it, but there’s a very good chance that it will show up as 3GB. Which ever way you decide to go with this, just make sure you get matched sets and install them in the matching colored slots.
As far as which brand is a good one, they’re all pretty much the same as far as quality and most all have a lifetime warranty. Some of the better brands are Corsair, G. Skill and Kingston.
