How do I change administrator rights on an older Gateway computer that is running Windows XP Pro?

My son has my old computer at college. He is trying to download an mp3 player software and it will not allow him to. He got to the safe mode text screen before Windows opened up, as suggested, but when he clicks that, Profile 1 and 2 come up. No administrator. He clicked both individually and still all that comes up is his account he created. My old accounts doesn’t even show up anymore. So the question is : Can anyone help me out on this?

There must be an administrator account for Windows to run, so it is there. It doesn’t have to have the name Administrator, but for that name not to be there the administrative rights had to be given to another user account.

Right click on My Computer and select Manage. In the box that comes up, under Users and Groups, select Groups and from there Administrators group. That will show you who has adm rights on the computer.

Depending upon how the login procedure is set up, you may be able to just click Start>Log Off>Switch User and enter the account.
