Dell Dimension 4500s RAM?

Hi. My desktop is a Dell Dimension 4500s and I need to upgrade the memory. In the owners manual, it says that is takes 128, 256, 384, 512, or 768MB, or 1 GB non-ECC DDR SDRAM. The max memory is 2 gb and I would like to upgrade to that amount. It says it is 266MHz DDR SDRAM. I always see DDR memory and SDRAM. Is there a kind called DDR SDRAM? Or does this just mean that it can take either one? Why is DDR ram so much more expensive than DDR2 ram?

DDR SDRAM – Double Data Rate Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory .. mouthful huh? basically, it is a specific type of RAM .. DDR SDRAM is the full accronym for this type of RAM .. so to answer your question, yes there is, in your case they are one and the same .. DDR RAM is an older technology (much older), therefore it is generally going to cost more simply because it is what’s called a “Legacy” item .. think of it as an “antique” per se .. DDR2 is mass produced now because it is the most common (DDR3 will soon replace it, but for now DDR3 is still somehwat rare on mainboards) .. basically it costs more for companies to make DDR since it’s not in high demand any more .. kind of like a historic car’s parts .. they generally cost more because they aren’t mass produced, they have to be specially fabricated ..

DDR SDRAM will have different “levels” .. i.e. – PC100, PC400, etc. .. you have to match this with what your motherboard supports ..
