Returning items to ebay?

I have bought the wrong type of memory for my dell dimension 2400. I bought 2 High density 1gb sticks when i need 2 low density sticks. I have already unpackaged the sticks and tried to install so can i return them still? PS. try reasoning with the seller, see if he has any return policies, if all else fails put it up for sale on ebay.
